MEAD (Minority Ethnic Access Development) Project is a recently established
initiative undertaken by Perth and Kinross Council and the Community Health
Partnership in collaboration with Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary
Services with local Minority Ethnic communities and the National Development
Programme. The initiative is led by the MEAD Steering Group. Development
support is provided by the National Development Programme – a Scottish
Government funded initiative delivered by MECOPP.
The MEAD Project provides specialist support to enable statutory and mainstream
voluntary sector organisations respond more appropriately to the needs of the
new migrant worker community and the changing needs of Perth and Kinross’s
established Minority Ethnic population. Supports include expert input into
policy and service development, community development, facilitating community
involvement and staff training.
MEAD also provide a range of services designed to assist migrant workers and
their families and Minority Ethnic carers and service users affected by
disability, ill health and older age access a broad range of support services
to improve their quality of life through:

increased access to local authority, health and related support services;

increased confidence in accessing the above services; and,

increased capacity of service providers to meet the needs of its target
beneficiaries.
Services include: advocacy and casework support; a multi-lingual advice and
information service; individual and group support and a range of recreational,
educational and therapeutic activities.
The organisation also make a considerable contribution to the development of
good community relations in Perth and Kinross through its ‘hosting’ of new
community events and participation in existing community activities.
As the only organisation to provide a dedicated service to migrant workers,
Minority Ethnic carers and service users in Perth and Kinross, MEAD provide a
unique and much needed service and one that will add considerably to the
voluntary sector infrastructure already in place within the local authority and
Health Board area.
