Perth College Student's Internships

MEAD Project in partnership with Perth College is providing volunteering programme to local and international students. Volunteers are required to assist members of Perth and Kinross’ ethnic minority communities in accessing public services by providing interpreting and translation service. Volunteers must be fluent in a language other than English, as well as having a good standard of conversational English. Must be comfortable in multicultural and diverse environment as they will engage with individuals from around the world as well meeting many service providers therefore having an exciting opportunity to learn and gain knowledge of voluntary and statutory sector here in Perth and Kinross.

Volunteers are based at the MEAD Project at 6-7 Rose Terrace, with activity in and around Perth and Kinross Local Authority area when assisting members of the community in accessing public services.

Volunteers can claim travel expenses, which must be authorised, while providing services to MEAD Project’s clients. 
Volunteers should be self-motivated, organised, punctual and friendly, and committed to helping others.

The typical duties which volunteer can expect to undertake during this opportunity:
  • provide interpreting / translation services for members of BME and Migrant communities using MEAD services
  • provide interpreting / translation service to Service providers working in partnership with MEAD.
  • participate in special training workshops / programme activities as needed.
  • answer inquiries from clients, agencies and individuals and interpret and explain words and phrases for meaning
  • review translated material for accuracy of meaning, grammar.
  • prepare written translations of correspondence, forms from one language to another for use by the staff, clients; others
  • undertake administration and reception duties, e.g. answer phone calls, etc.


By undertaking this opportunity volunteer will make a demonstrable contribution to the working lives of ethnic minority and migrant workers, the College and MEAD Project’s:
  • improved communications skills, professional development, learning community engagement skills
  • improved confidence and self esteem to work in a multicultural/diverse environment
  • gain knowledge and experience of local government and voluntary sector
  • opportunities for training and personal development
  • learn about importance of confidentiality and data protection


All volunteers will receive a certificate; after completed 20 hours; as an appreciation of their contribution to MEAD’s work.
